Life Quotes 10,11,12

For Holy Week I'm listing my favorite life quotes. These are statements I pray over regularly.

10. "My one aim in life is to secure personal holiness" (Wesley). Holiness matters most. Enough said.

11. "Godliness with contentment is great gain" (1 TM 6:6). Discontent is the undoing of many believers. A miracle of inner contentment is what we all need. It would bring us all peace of mind and heart.

12. "Call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me" (PS 50:15). Notice a major condition for granted requests is that our desire be to bring glory to Him. If it's about us, expect little from prayer. If it's about Him, expect much.

Life Quotes 7,8,9

For Holy Week I am sharing my favorite life quotes. I hope they will bless you.

7. "The soul that is united with God is feared by the devil as though it were God Himself" (John of the Cross). The key to spiritual power is uninterrupted communion with Jesus. His presence in us makes the evil one flee.

8. "Speak the truth in love" (EP 4:15). Be straightforward when dealing with others, but do so gently. Do be mild toward others, but also speak truth into their lives, though it is painful.

9. "Preach the Gospel, die, and be forgotten" (Count Zinzendorf). May our life and ministry always and forevermore be only about Jesus, never about us.

Life Quotes 4,5,6

For Holy Week I am posting my life quotes. I hope they will bless you as they have me.

4. "Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips" (PR 27:2). Don't blow your own horn. Let someone else sing your praises. This is a tough one for me. If I succeed, I want everyone to know it.

5. "Not my will, but Thine, be done." In Gethsemane our Master taught us the essence of prayer. It is not bending God's will to ours, but rather bending our will to His. These are tough words to say in absolute sincerity. When Jesus said them, He sweat drops of blood.

6. "I will look unto the Lord; I will wait for the God of my salvation: my God will hear me" (Micah 7:7). I hate to wait. Few things try my faith more severely than when God does not act according to my timetable. He never seems to be overly affected by my frustration in this area.

Life Quotes 1,2,3

For Holy Week I want to blog my favorite life quotes. I'll do a few each day.

1. John 15:5b Jesus said, "Without me ye can do thing." The first lesson of successful Christian living is humility, utter dependence on God for everything.

2. PH 4:13 Paul said, "I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me." When dependent on God, unlimited power is available to us to do His will. The main context for this verse is contentment. May God grant it to us.

3. 1Chron. 13:2 David said to the congregation, "If it seem good unto you, and that it be of the Lord our God, let us. . ." A statement on my Baptist view of church polity. We seek God's will, and the people's consensus.

Church Robbery

Police say an intoxicated man who broke into a St. Louis-area church might have gotten away with it if not for a case of the munchies. The man is charged with three felonies and jailed on $30,000 bond.

Responding officers found that a deep freezer had been damaged, and ice cream had been taken. The man was spotted walking about three blocks from the church — intoxicated and with ice cream on his face and clothing.

Court documents show he is on probation for burglarizing another church nearby.

A Pastor's Fulfilling Day

Today is the kind of day Pastors were born for. Several things are coming into play for Ruth and me today.

This morning about 4am one of our church's fine young men passed away. This is hard on a preacher, yet somehow down deep in the depths of our soul, we know we were called for this. To be there when people most need help is one of life's greatest blessings.

Right now I am studying for future sermons. One way I know God gave me the spiritual gift of teaching is that I absolutely love to study Bible commentaries. These authors are my advisors and counselors. I lean on them heavily.

At noon Ruth and I will eat lunch with a young couple soon to be married. We will share their joy, talk about the future, and do our best to bless them.

This afternoon Ruth and I will help celebrate the 50th wedding anniversary of two of our dear friends. We will look at pictures, listen to stories, have pictures taken, and then come home with a sense of deep satisfaction.

The ministry for sure has its stresses, but days like today are why we entered this profession. We find meaning and purpose in the tasks God has ordained for us to do. Thank you, Second Baptist, for letting Ruth and me do the things God called us a long time ago to do.
